Security forces staged a number of raids in the northern city of Tripoli on Friday in search of wanted suspects and in light of recent rallies in the city that demanded a halt to the “arbitrary” arrests taking place there.

MTV reported that a suspect was arrested during a raid on the government hospital in the district of al-Qobbeh.

The Islamic National Gathering slammed on Thursday the “arbitrary arrests targeting the sons of Tripoli” in northern Lebanon, warning that the “oppression of the Sunni sect will result in unexpected reactions.”

"We reject the arbitrary arrests of Tripoli's sons and we hold the Attorney General of the court of cassation and the judges fully responsible for any Sunni's detention,” al-Mustaqbal bloc MP Mohammed Kabbara announced after a meeting with the northern city's figures.

Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq stressed on Thursday that the security plan enforced in the northern city of Tripoli is “holding up,” pointing out that arrests occur according to arrest warrants.

“We will not yield to the pressure exerted by the street” to free detained suspects, Mashnouq said in comments published in As Safir newspaper.

The commander of an armed group in the northern city of Tripoli was taken back to Roumieh prison after he underwent medical tests, drawing the ire of his relatives, the state-run National News Agency reported on Wednesday.

NNA denied that Ziad Allouki had a heart attack. It said his health deteriorated because he had gone on hunger strike in Roumieh, the country's largest prison.

A hoax bomb was discovered on Wednesday evening under al-Khnaq Bridge in the northern city of Tripoli.

State-run National News Agency said the device consisted of an unarmed hand grenade and a timer that was connected to it.

The Lebanese army said Tuesday that one of its patrols was targeted overnight with a roadside bomb in the northern city of Tripoli.

The homemade bomb, which was made up of around 800 grams of explosives, went off at 3:15 am while soldiers were patrolling the area of Bab al-Ramel, the military said in a communique.
