A meeting was held between members of the Lebanese Democratic Party, the Progressive Socialist Party and Hizbullah at the residence of LDP leader MP Talal Arslan in Khalde, a statement said Friday.

The statement said that Wafiq Safa and Bilal Dagher represented Hizbullah while MP Akram Shehayyeb and Salah al-Btedini attended the meeting on behalf of Walid Jumblat’s PSP.

Hizbullah praised on Wednesday the spiritual summit that was held at Dar al-Fatwa on Tuesday, saying that its concluding statement reflects national principles and protects Lebanon.

It said: “The summit statement is tantamount to a national document that reflects the Lebanese people’s expectations.”

Bkirki sources have denied that the seat of the Maronite church was preparing for a meeting between Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi and Hizbullah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.

The sources told pan-Arab daily Asharq al-Awsat that “we don’t have (any information) about such a thing and we don’t know if any meeting is being prepared for unless the other side is making preparations.”

Hizbullah is preparing for a meeting between its Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi, reported MTV on Tuesday.

It said that the visit would be aimed at repaying the patriarch for his recent stands and tour of southern Lebanon.

Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi revealed on Tuesday that he had requested from France that the excuses for Hizbullah to maintain its possession of arms be eliminated.

He said during the Dar al-Fatwa spiritual summit: “We requested French assistance in eliminating its excuses to keep its weapons and help in strengthening the Lebanese army because only then can we say that the party no longer needs its arms.”

The Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc on Tuesday voiced concerns over “the recurrence of security incidents” in the country.

In a statement issued after its weekly meeting, the bloc said it discussed “the surge in security incidents, such as the latest atrocious crime against the peaceful family of Ali al-Hajj Dib in the Ras al-Nabaa area, and other daily incidents involving the use of firearms.”

Hizbullah deputy leader Sheikh Naim Qassem accused the March 14 forces on Tuesday of acting in a way that serves the U.S.-Israeli project.

“I don’t like to mention much what the March 14 group is doing as a conspiracy,” Qassem told Iran’s Fars news agency. “But it acts in a way that whether willingly or unwillingly serves the Israeli-American project.”

The dispute over the funding of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon will not lead the government to propose its dissolution, prominent government sources told the pan-Arab daily al-Hayat in remarks published on Sunday.

Furthermore, they added that this issue would not lead to the toppling of the government either seeing as it was able to overcome other contentious matters, such as the electricity file.

Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri voiced on Thursday his support for the Lebanese people and their ability to defend Lebanon’s democratic system against all attempts to target it.

He said in a statement on the occasion of International Democracy Day: “We are voicing a concern over democracy today because of the threat of arms, which are democracy’s greatest enemy.”

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat stressed Tuesday that his latest stances are not signs of a new political “realignment,” denying that he has requested to meet Syrian President Bashar al-Assad or Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.

Following talks with visiting Russian presidential envoy Mikhail Margelov, Jumblat said: “What I have said is not a realignment, it is only a reminder of what was agreed around the national dialogue table. It is beneficial for one to remember things every now and then.”
