Al-Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc leader MP Fouad Saniora accused on Saturday the cabinet of covering up for “criminals and assassination groups,” wondering if Prime Minister Najib Miqati is waiting until all the opposition leaders are “liquidated” until he decides to hand over the telecommunications data.

“The citizens are wondering if the assassination bids returned while the cabinet is still under the influence of the political rift,” Saniora said at a national gathering in Majdelyoun.

French President Francois Hollande reiterated on Friday that his country will continue to defend Lebanon’s independence, sovereignty and unity of its territories.

“Our main concern is to preserve the stability (in Lebanon),” Hollande said in a cable sent to Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea.

U.S. Senator John McCain arrived in Lebanon this week to hold talks with a number of officials on the Syrian crisis and its effect on Lebanon, reported al-Joumhouria newspaper on Friday.

Widely-informed sources told the newspaper that his trip is aimed at following up on Lebanese position on the crisis.

The March 14 forces on Thursday called on the government to “resign immediately” and called for referring the assassination attempts against Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea and MP Boutros Harb to the U.N.-backed Special Tribunal for Lebanon.

In a statement issued after an emergency meeting at Harb’s residence in the wake of a failed attempt on his life, the March 14 forces also called on the government to immediately hand over telecom data linked to recent assassinations bids to the relevant security agencies.

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea slammed on Thursday the assassination attempt against MP Butros Harb, questioning how the security forces have so far failed in uncovering any lead in any of the assassinations against March 14 officials.

He said: “Some security agencies only protect the LF and Mustaqbal Movement, while others still consider Syrian intelligence as their friend.”

The Parliament's Bureau Committee failed to convene on Thursday as the March 14-led opposition MPs boycotted the meeting pending a “comprehensive solution.”

MTV channel said that the opposition is demanding a solution for the parliament’s approval of Electricite du Liban’s contract workers’ full-time employment as political tensions soared over the controversial issue.

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea voiced on Tuesday his rejection of the current conduct at parliament, saying that he “supports and opposes” granting Electricite du Liban contract workers full-time employment.

He said during a press conference at his Maarab residence: “Granting such a large number of workers full-time employment is not possible because it will lead to the bankruptcy of the state.”

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea expressed belief on Friday that Lebanon has reached a better stage amid all the developments in the region, calling on the cabinet to control the security chaos in the country.

“The future of Lebanon seems better… Although the cabinet is leaving the country unrestrained,” Geagea said after meeting with a delegation from Beit Mallat town in Akkar.

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea renewed his rejection of the national dialogue sessions, saying that he is seeking serious talks, while the current discussions are bound to fail, reported As Safir newspaper on Saturday.

He told the newspaper: “Serious and immediate government action is the substitute for the dialogue.”

Lebanese Forces Leader Samir Geagea said Wednesday that the “government is leaving the army without a policy or plan to confront security events,” adding that Energy Minister Jebran Bassil “should resign if he cannot address the electricity issue.”

At a press conference held in Maarab, Geagea said that “the electricity shortage is unacceptable and Lebanon did not witness such a blackout in all areas, even during war.”
