General Labor Confederation Chief Ghassan Ghosn urged the cabinet to raise minimum salaries from LL500,000 to LL1,200,000 so that the new wages would fit the citizens’ purchasing power.

Ghosn told Voice of Lebanon radio on Thursday that “the policy statement will unveil the cabinet’s approach in dealing with the economic issues.”

“It (the government) announced that the economy is one of its priorities,” the GLC chief said.

On Wednesday, GLC’s executive council bureau announced that there will be “no grace period (granted) for the cabinet and its ministers” if the demands were not met.

It called on the government to undertake decisions “because the Lebanese can’t tolerate more burdens.”

The committee said in a statement after a meeting headed by Ghosn that the relations with the cabinet will be determined by the measures that it would take to end the “deteriorating” economic situation and the inclusion in the policy statement of GLC’s “vital needs.”

The GLC also demanded that the gasoline prices be restricted to LL25,000 for 20 liters of 95 and 98 octane and LL20,000 for diesel.

They called for fairer taxes, putting an end to the random rise of prices and development authorities aimed at holding accountable violators.

Mr. Gohsn, the ignorant..

he does not know basics of economis..such a drastic increase will lead to
hyper inflation..which renders the increase itself obselete..
and from which money is the government supposed to double wages?????
we are neither norway, nor switzerland.. we are somalia on the med.

mazen you know i agree with you to some extent
but lebanon is stable economicaly beleive me, we have the highest gold on reserve per capita if you did not know that,
but unfortunately our leaders are corrupt and selfish they like to keep the money to themselves.

as for the minimum wage, it has to go up sooner or later, here in toronto its 10.75 $ per hour !!

Mazen is right. This ridiculous increase is political stunt. This increase would amount to 8000LL per hour. Assuming they work 35hr a week. This is more than the US. However min wage should rise, I would suspect it will by 10%. even to 600,000LL per month would be generous.

Raising the minimum wage would be catastrophic to the economy. When companies will be faced with such an increase what do you think they will do, pay more? Certainly not, they will simply reduce the number of employees to stay competitive. Therefore such a raise in the minimum wage would lead to a massive increase in unemployment rate.
