Military drone suspected in overnight blast near Warsaw

Polish authorities said Wednesday that an object which exploded in the night in the east of the country may have been a military drone of unknown provenance.

Police said they had been informed of an blast in a cornfield near the village of Osiny in eastern Poland -- 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the capital Warsaw.

The area is also close to both the Ukrainian and Belarusian borders.

There were no casualties but some windows were blown out in nearby buildings.

"Preliminary conclusions... indicate that the object found is most likely a military drone," regional prosecutor Grzegorz Trusiewicz told reporters in comments shown on Polish television.

He said it was not possible for the moment to determine its origin or trajectory.

The Polish army said: "No violation of Polish airspace was detected last night".

Polish media, quoting defense ministry sources, said that it could have been a version of the Russian Gerbera drone, which is regularly used as a decoy in Russian strikes against Ukraine.

In 2023, a Russian missile went through Polish airspace near the Ukrainian border during one of Russia's barrages.

In 2022, a Ukrainian air defense missile fell on the Polish village of Przewodow, near the border, killing two civilians.
