U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has spoken with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant regarding the “threat” posed by Hezbollah, the Pentagon said, hours after Israel said it killed Hezbollah’s most senior military commander Fouad Shukur in a rare strike on Beirut’s southern suburbs.

“They discussed the threats to Israel posed by a range of Iranian-backed terrorist groups, including Lebanese Hezbollah,” the readout said without referring to the strike on Shukur and the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, an operation also blamed on Israel.

“Secretary Austin reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to Israel’s security and right to self-defense. They also discussed ongoing efforts to achieve a diplomatic solution that enables citizens on both sides of the Israel-Lebanon border to safely return to their homes,” the statement said.

Gallant for his part “highlighted that especially during these times, the State of Israel is working to achieve a framework for the release of hostages,” his office said.

The statement said Gallant gave an update on the “precise operation” that killed Shukur.

“Minister Gallant emphasized that Israel does not seek war; however the IDF (Israeli army) remains prepared to defend its citizens and to respond to any attack by Hezbollah,” the statement added.
