Hizbullah has officially informed resigned Minister Adnan Sayyed Hussein that it was backing off from its promise to allot to him a portfolio in the new cabinet, al-Mustaqbal daily reported Sunday.

The newspaper said that the Shiite party had promised Sayyed Hussein to either give him the foreign affairs or information portfolio when he announced his resignation from Caretaker Premier Saad Hariri’s government in January.

Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun announced on Saturday that Lebanon’s future will be stable, ruling out the eruption of a civil or sectarian war or Sunni-Shiite conflict in the country.

He said upon his arrival to the southern town of Mlita: “We will twist the arm of U.S. Intelligence in Lebanon like we twisted that of Israel.”

President Michel Suleiman is waiting for Premiere-designate Najib Miqati’s cabinet lineup to express his opinion about it and to add his share of ministers, An Nahar newspaper reported on Saturday.

“Suleiman told the two Khalils on Thursday (Speaker Nabih Berri's advisor MP Ali Hasan Khalil and Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah's advisor Hussein Khalil) that he will not announce any name before he examines the final draft of the formation,” the newspaper said.

The dispute over the sixth Sunni minister arose when Speaker Nabih Berri’s advisor MP Ali Hasan Khalil and Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah’s political advisor Hussein al-Khalil held talks with Prime Minister-designate Najib Miqati on Friday afternoon.

Premier-designate Najib Miqati held talks Friday afternoon with MP Ali Hassan Khalil, Speaker Nabih Berri’s aide, and Hussein Khalil, Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah’s aide, Al-Manar television reported.

For its part, MTV reported that an agreement has not yet been reached over the sixth Maronite candidate for the new cabinet, noting that discussions were still ongoing concerning several portfolios.

The Syrian leadership stressed to President Michel Suleiman that no side will in no way attempt to weaken his position or his pivotal role in forming a government, reported al-Liwa newspaper on Friday.

The optimism expressed by the March 8 forces about the possible formation of the new cabinet in next few days is exaggerated and is a tactic aimed at achieving political gains, a centrist politician told al-Liwaa daily.

The source said in remarks published Friday that Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun and his ally Hizbullah believe that the delay in the formation of the government was weakening them and strengthening Premier-designate Najib Miqati.

An Nahar newspaper said that Miqati held an extensive telephone conversation with Suleiman on Wednesday to update them him about the results of his talks with Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun at parliament and a meeting he held later in the day with Caretaker Minister Jebran Bassil, Speaker Nabih Berri’s aide MP Ali Hassan Khalil and Hassan Khalil, who is Hizbullah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah’s assistant.

The protocol picture marking the advent of Najib Miqati's government could be taken at the doorsteps of the Baabda Palace over the weekend after major parties overcame the main hurdles preventing the formation of the cabinet.

On Thursday, the media sounded optimistic about the possible formation of the government in the next few days after the leaders of the March 8 forces held ice-breaking talks a day earlier.

The March General Secretariat called on Wednesday President Michel Suleiman to halt his efforts to reach “futile” settlements with the March 8 camp seeing as Hizbullah and its allies have sought take over Lebanon by force since the Cedar Revolution in 2005.

It said in a statement after its weekly meeting: “The President should cease cooperating with the camp that staged a coup against the previous government and force all political parties to assume their responsibilities.”
