Report: Advanced Technology Used in Harb Assassination Attempt

Advanced technology that has never before been used was employed in the assassination attempt against MP Butros Harb, reported al-Joumhouria newspaper on Friday.

A security source told the newspaper that the explosive that was removed from the elevator shaft could have been placed in a manner that made it difficult to detect.

Police found the device in the elevator shaft of the building that lies in Badaro district’s Sami Solh Street a few hours after the suspect carrying a knife was subdued but managed to escape along with two accomplices.

The criminals were discovered before they could completely arm the device, which needed exact calculations in order to determine how much explosives were needed in order to kill the person in the elevator.

Sources revealed to As Safir newspaper on Friday that the device was being prepared in a manner to make it seem that the victim would have been killed by electrical wire friction or possibly a malfunction in the elevator.

“The investigations in the case are complicated and they will take time,” they emphasized.

In addition, they stressed the importance of obtaining fingerprints at the scene.

Other security sources revealed that residents in the area succeeded in identifying one of the perpetrators.

Asked if the criminals had headed to Beirut’s southern suburbs, the sources replied: “The footage obtained by surveillance cameras will reveal the criminals’ exact destination.”

They said that the cameras monitor “every inch” of the road leading to the building.

Sources close to Harb told As Safir that the MP had received warnings that he may be the target of an assassination attempt, saying that he has since limited his mobility and changed his work routine.

The pan-Arab daily al-Hayat reported on Friday that the case has been referred to the Internal Security Forces’ Intelligence Bureau, adding that ISF chief Ashraf Rifi had inspected the crime scene.

Harb escaped the booby-trapped elevator when three people had claimed they were going to the building’s roof to fix an internet problem when a security guard and a doctor, who has a clinic in the building, felt suspicious and called security agencies to arrest them.

Two of them escaped but the third clashed with the two witnesses, injuring them, the MP said.

Needless to say, the car headed to Dahyieh where law and order does not prevail. I promise every Lebanese citizen that once the regime of bashar the butcher is gone, Lebanon will enjoy a new era of peace and stability. As long as there is a criminal regime that exploits countries for their own political benefits, the region will not know peace.

Souri I hope that the new regime will have the absolute fullest respect for Lebanon's independence and sovereignty otherwise we will be back to square one with you country. The signals that I'm getting from the opposition movement vis-a-vis this issue have not been fully encouraging. Too many "trablous-al-sham" signs for my taste in your demonstrations and internet messages.

You got that right Tony but keep in mind that both (FT & Motormouth) and one the same....this lame individual is a loner and finds self stimulation (and I mean this in several ways) by creating aliases to support his BS posts....

If it is "needless to say" then don't say it. You must be a graduate from Sa3sa3 University.

Three guys in the building, at least two cars (one BMW X5) with two men in each.Probably like a 10 men team operating like in the Geagea assasination attempt. New technology used. Sounds like a professional operation. The usual rants about Israel might occur, but no doubt the Syria/Hezbollah alliance will be the prime suspect. In the tire burning operation at al.jdeid they might claim loss of control over their sympathisers in the street, but the Harb-operation is to sophisticated to explain in that way.

Whoever knows he is wrong makes violence and crime his means to defend his "truth"...

Thumb geha 06 July 2012, 12:09

no we all know exactly who is behind all these attempts.

Missing Rambo 06 July 2012, 13:57

Who? Please share it us! i see this sentense a lot in the news but they never reveal who it is. I am so kneeing to believe that it is a special OPS of a radical Palestinian group armed to their teeth and trying to help Syrian regime by deflecting attention away from what is going on in Syria.

Considering that the minister of defense Ghosn is also a tenant in the same building as Harb, the sophisticated device planted inside the elevator is so sophisticated that it would detect the lowness of Harb due to his infamous INBITA7A (at least his most recent) to his master and commander Feltman and go off immediately! Man, what technology can do these days!

we alll know who is doing this. No investigation has revealed anything in Lebanon. We all know why and el habal 3al jarrar.

Missing cedars 07 July 2012, 04:46

It is not Hizb directly but I am 100% sure that the data of all these anti-Syrian political figures is presented by the followers of the armed militia. The executors are Syrian backed militias (PSP, Baath and Jibrin gang), It is not coincident at all for Harb and Ja3Ja3 same as the rest of the M14 to be assassinated.

Thumb lebanon_first 07 July 2012, 15:05

absolutely cedars. The real thugs are not HA. It is those syrian backed militias allied with HA. Baath, Jibril, Progressive syrian party etc... (I dont bother to learn the names of lowlives)
