Iraq Seeks 'Uninterrupted' Turkish Military Support against IS

Iraq's foreign minister on Tuesday sought "uninterrupted" military support from neighboring Turkey in its fight against jihadists from the Islamic State group.

"The presence of Daesh constitutes a threat not only to Iraq but also to countries in the region as well as Turkey," Ibrahim al-Jaafari told a joint news conference in Ankara with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu, using a pejorative name for IS.

Turkey Detains 150 Migrants Trying to Sail to Greece

Turkey's coastguard on Monday detained around 150 migrants as they attempted to sail from the country's western coast to the Greek island of Lesbos, state media reported.

Acting on a tip-off, the authorities stopped 101 immigrants from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Syria as they were about to set off from the Turkish town of Ayvacik in the western Canakkale province.

Sources: Qatari Officials Ask Ibrahim to Meet them in Doha over Prisoner Exchange

General Security chief Maj. Gen. Abbas Ibrahim is expected to travel to Qatar this week after it was reported that he would visit Turkey to discuss with Qatari officials the case of Lebanese servicemen taken hostage by jihadists last year.

Security sources told al-Akhbar daily published on Monday that the officials asked Ibrahim to meet them in Doha instead.

Report: Turkey Arrests 45 IS Recruits in Southeast

Turkish security forces have over the last three days detained 45 foreign nationals seeking to cross into Syria to join Islamic State jihadists from the southeastern city of Gaziantep, the Dogan news agency reported Sunday.

If confirmed, the detentions would mark a stepping up of pressure on IS by the Turkish authorities after the arrest of 21 suspected members of the group in Istanbul and elsewhere on Friday.

Kurdish Militants Threaten to Attack Turkey Dams

A Kurdish militant group on Sunday threatened to stage guerrilla attacks on hydroelectric dams being built in southeastern Turkey, accusing the government of violating a fragile ceasefire.

The Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK) said in a statement quoted by the pro-Kurdish Firat news agency that the building of the dams was aimed at displacing people and helping the Turkish military rather than creating energy.

Turkey Arrests 21 Suspected IS Members in Major Operation

Turkey on Friday detained 21 suspected members of the Islamic State group, including three foreigners, in a major operation in several cities including Istanbul, state media said.

Police detained the suspects in pre-dawn raids in several addresses in Istanbul, as well as Sanliurfa province near the Syrian border, southern Mersin province and Kocaeli province east of Istanbul.

Thai Embassy Closed in Turkey after Protest against Deported Uighurs

Thailand on Friday closed its embassy and consulate in Turkey after a protest against its deportation of Uighur Muslims to China, as the U.S. warned the minority could face "harsh treatment" on their return.

The temporary closure of Thailand's embassy in Ankara and consulate in Istanbul comes after anti-Chinese demonstrators stormed the latter, damaging furnishings and pulling down the sign outside.
