U.S. President Barack Obama on Monday congratulated his counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on recent elections that extended the Turkish president's term in office.
Days before traveling to Turkey for a G20 summit, Obama spoke to Erdogan to "congratulate the Turkish people on the November 1 elections" and discuss the summit, the White House said.

Turkish anti-terrorist police have detained 38 foreigners including women and children who were reportedly seeking to join the Islamic State group in Syria, media reports said Monday.
Turkey has gone on the offensive against IS suspects ahead of the G20 summit in the Mediterranean resort of Antalya and after a spate of bloody attacks blamed on the jihadists.

The rebel Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) said Thursday that it had torn up a unilateral truce in Turkey after a surge in deadly violence since the country's weekend election.
Its announcement comes after several days of Turkish air raids against the PKK in both southeastern Turkey and across the border in northern Iraq and a spate of deadly clashes.

Turkey has said it is planning to launch a military campaign soon against the Islamic State group which is accused of carrying out the deadliest attack in the country's history.
"We have plans to act militarily against them in the coming days," Foreign Minister Feridun Sinirlioglu told a conference in the northern Iraqi city of Arbil on Wednesday. describing the jihadists as a "clear and present threat".

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday called for a new constitution after his ruling Justice and Development Party's (AKP) weekend triumph at the ballot box.
"Solving the issue of a new constitution was one of the most important messages of November 1," he said in a televised speech in Ankara.

Turkish warplanes have again struck Kurdish rebel targets in the southeast of the country and northern Iraq, the military said Wednesday.
"Sixteen targets were destroyed as a result of air strikes," the army said after the operations Tuesday that focused on Turkey's mountainous Daglica region near the Iraqi border as well as several regions in northern Iraq.

Turkey has arrested nine suspected members of the Islamic State group for allegedly plotting suicide attacks on a political party and an opposition newspaper, media reports said Wednesday.
Police detained two suspects after a car chase on Friday in the southeastern province of Gaziantep near the Syrian border and another seven accomplices were detained in later police raids, the Dogan news agency reported.

Turkey will make a leap forward if it adopts a system strengthening the powers of strongman President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after his ruling party's election win, his spokesman said on Wednesday.
"We have a clear opinion that the presidential system will help Turkey jump to another league," Ibrahim Kalin told reporters in Ankara, signaling that the issue could be put to the Turkish people in a referendum.

Turkish warplanes have bombed Kurdish rebel bases in Turkey and northern Iraq, the army said Tuesday, as officials announced the first militant deaths since the government swept back to power at the weekend.
Ankara also ruled out an immediate resumption of peace talks that have been stalled since tit-for-tat violence erupted in July, shattering a 2013 ceasefire.

Turkish police on Tuesday detained 44 suspects including high-ranking bureaucrats and police officers as part of a probe into supporters of a U.S.-based cleric accused of plotting to bring down President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, local media reported.
Police raided addresses in 18 provinces including the western coastal city of Izmir, the private Dogan news agency reported. Prosecutors had issued arrest warrants for 57 suspects in total, it added.
