U.N. Report: Violence, Discrimination Slow Advances by Women

Women around the world enjoy more rights than ever before but still face discrimination in the workplace and far too often fall victim to violence at home, a U.N. report said Tuesday.

The document issued by U.N. Women, the new agency headed by Chile's former president Michelle Bachelet, hailed the progress women have made at the ballot box, noting that "virtually universal" suffrage now is the rule around the world, compared to a century ago when just two countries allowed women to vote.

The world needs $1.9 trillion in green technology investments a year, with over half of that sum necessary for developing countries," the U.N. said Tuesday.

"Over the next 40 years, $1.9 trillion (1.31 trillion Euros) per year will be needed for incremental investments in green technologies," the U.N. Economic and Social Affairs body said in its annual survey.

Mladic Refuses to Plea before U.N. Court

Former Bosnian Serb military Chief Ratko Mladic on Monday refused to enter a plea before a U.N. war crimes court and the judge ordered his removal from the courtroom for disruptive behavior.
