The March 14-led opposition held Telecommunications Minister Nicolas Sehnaoui and those who support him responsible for preventing the security forces and authorities from obtaining the telecom data in their probe into assassination attempts.

A senior security official told al-Joumhouria newspaper that acquiring the telecom data for one day isn’t sufficient as the competent security authorities need to frequently analyze and follow up the data in their investigations.

The March 14 forces on Wednesday called on Premier Najib Miqati and Justice Minister Shakib Qortbawi to refer the assassination attempt against Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea to the U.N.-backed Special Tribunal for Lebanon.

The March 14 General-Secretariat said in a statement it had been following up “over the past hours the circumstances of the assassination attempt against Dr. Samir Geagea in Maarab today.”

Several Lebanese leaders on Wednesday contacted Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea to condemn the assassination attempt he escaped earlier in the day, as President Michel Suleiman called for “intensifying the investigations in order to unveil and arrest the perpetrators.”

Former prime minister Saad Hariri telephoned Geagea, deploring the attempt on his life and describing it as the latest in a long series of political assassinations in Lebanon.

He announced during a press conference: “We will not halt our revolution no matter how hard they try and political leaders must take the necessary security precautions.”

The security personnel at the residence immediately headed to the scene where they found empty bullet shells belonging to a 12.7 sniper rifle, it said.

Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn hit back Thursday at Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea over the latter’s call for the army to storm the Ain el-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp.

“Those behind such calls do not belong to Lebanon, its unity or its future,” Ghosn said in an interview on Al-Manar television.

Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi stated on Wednesday that he was not informed that the Bkirki meeting that was supposed to be in April has been postponed.

He said: “We are still awaiting the outcome of the efforts of the follow-up committee that is studying the parliamentary electoral law.”
