President Michel Suleiman is expected to issue a warning this week that Lebanon will no longer be able to confront the burden of refugees as the weekend witnessed an exodus of thousands of Syrians.

They have been fleeing heavy fighting in the mountainous region of Qalamoun, an area that stretches north of the Syrian capital along the Lebanese frontier.

Caretaker Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour criticized what he termed the involvement of certain states in Lebanon's internal affairs, saying Lebanon has been suffering from crises since its independence in 1943.

“Any meddling in the internal affairs of a state goes out of the proper context,” Mansour told An Nahar Kuwaiti daily in an interview published on Sunday.

President Michel Suleiman and caretaker Prime Minister Najib Miqati held a work meeting on Friday on ongoing efforts to support Lebanon on the economic and security levels and in harboring Syrian refugees, reported the daily An Nahar on Saturday.

Sources from the meeting revealed that the World Bank estimates that Lebanon has lost some $7 billion from the flow of refugees into the country.

Caretaker Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour traveled to Kuwait on Friday, saying he would encourage Kuwaiti officials to advise their citizens to visit Lebanon despite a travel ban.

In remarks to reporters at Rafik Hariri International Airport before heading to Kuwait, Mansour said: “We have friendly ties with Kuwait and we are keen on this relationship.”

Kuwait has reported its second case of the deadly MERS coronavirus for a man who just returned from abroad, the health ministry said.

In a statement cited by the official KUNA agency late Wednesday, the ministry said the new case was for a 52-year-old Kuwaiti national who was in a stable condition.

Kuwait's Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad Al-Sabah on Wednesday ordered that $10 million in urgent relief aid be sent to typhoon-ravaged Philippines, where thousands of people are feared dead.

"In sympathy with the victims of the destructive typhoon that ravaged the Philippines ... the emir ordered $10 million in urgent relief aid to help face this humanitarian catastrophe," the official KUNA news agency cited State Minister for Cabinet Affairs Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah Al-Sabah as saying.

Kuwait has discovered its first case of the MERS coronavirus for a citizen who is in "critical condition," the health ministry said on Wednesday.

"The first case of coronavirus has been discovered in the country for a citizen who was moved to the Infectious Diseases Hospital in critical condition," the ministry said, quoted by the official KUNA news agency.

Ten Kuwaiti lawmakers filed a no-confidence motion against the health minister Tuesday over alleged mismanagement and corruption after a marathon questioning.

The OPEC state has seen dozens of prime ministers and other cabinet members questioned since 2006, with many forced to resign ahead of no-confidence votes.

A Kuwaiti lawmaker demanded on Sunday to question State Minister for Planning and Development Rula Dashti over alleged mismanagement, in the third grilling request in less than two weeks.

MP Khalil Abdullah accused the minister of failing to perform her duties, blamed her for delayed development plans and accused her of "undermining Kuwait's national economic security and risking the country's future."

Baabda Palace has informed Kuwait that President Michel Suleiman would attend the Arab-African Summit this month, al-Joumhouria daily said Wednesday amid a report that his visit to Saudi Arabia is imminent.

Baabda sources told al-Joumhouria that during the summit, which will be held in Kuwait on November 19-20, Suleiman will call for the payment of funds that Arab countries had pledged during a donors' conference on Syria last January.
