Kuwaiti National Assembly Speaker Marzouq al-Ghanim paid a visit on Monday to Syrian refugee encampments in the eastern Bekaa region, reported the National News Agency.

It said that he visited the encampments in the Bar Elias and al-Marj regions.

Kuwait's supreme court on Sunday upheld a two-year jail sentence handed to an opposition online activist for writing tweets deemed offensive to the Gulf state's ruler.

Hejab al-Hajeri, a student of law in his early 20s, said on his Twitter account after the ruling that his "determination is bigger than their jail."

Kuwaiti Speaker Marzouq al-Ghanim is scheduled to visit Beirut on Friday to discuss with Lebanese officials the crisis of Syrian refugees, al-Liwaa newspaper reported.

During his two-day visit, al-Ghanim will hold talks with Speaker Nabih Berri and tour with Social Affairs Minister Rashid Derbas encampments of Syrian refugees.

The Kuwaiti opposition on Tuesday declared "war" against rife corruption, alleging that tens of billions of dollars of public funds have been stolen by former senior officials.

Kuwait's supreme court on Sunday handed three former opposition MPs 20-month suspended jail terms for publicly insulting the emir, overturning an acquittal by the appeals court.

The court, whose rulings are final, also ordered Falah Al-Sawwagh, Khaled al-Tahus and Bader al-Dahum to pay a bail of 2,000 Kuwaiti dinars ($7,100, 5,200 euros), according to the verdict.
