Hizbullah denied on Thursday that it had trained Bahraini Shiite activists, saying it was only providing moral and political support to the opposition in the kingdom.

Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Khaled bin Hamad al-Khalifa said Wednesday that Shiite Bahrainis who have participated in the protests against the government “were trained in Lebanon.”

The March 14 General Secretariat condemned on Wednesday attempts by some media outlets to involve Lebanon in Syria’s popular opposition movements, which claimed that some independence movements in Lebanon are inciting unrest in the Arab state.

It called on in a statement after its weekly meeting these outlets to cease their “rumors” which it believed are an attempt to employ the developments in the Arab world on the internal Lebanese political scene, demanding that legal action be taken against them.

Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Khaled bin Hamad al-Khalifa accused Hizbullah of training Bahraini opposition activists that have launched a campaign to topple the kingdom’s regime.

In remarks to pan-Arab daily al-Hayat published Wednesday, Sheikh Khaled said that Shiite Bahrainis who have participated in the protests against the government “were trained in Lebanon.”

NATO's supreme allied commander in Europe, U.S. Navy Adm. James Stavridis, has said that officials had seen "flickers" of possible al-Qaida and Hizbullah involvement with the Libyan rebel forces fighting Moammar Gadhafi’s regime.

But in a Senate hearing Tuesday, Stavridis said that there was no evidence of significant numbers within the political opposition group's leadership.

Hizbullah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and Progressive Socialist Party chief Walid Jumblat discussed the latest developments and cabinet formation efforts, a Hizbullah statement said Monday.

The statement said that Caretaker Minister Ghazi Aridi and Wafiq Safa attended the meeting at an undisclosed location. It did not say when the meeting took place.

Security forces arrested on March 21 an individual suspected of collaborating with Israel, announced the ISF in a statement on Monday.

It revealed that the citizen had been collaborating with Israeli intelligence from 2006 until early 2011.

President Michel Suleiman has urged Bahrain to safeguard the interests of Lebanese expatriates in the Kingdom in line with strong Lebanese-Bahraini relations, a statement released by Baabda palace said.

Suleiman followed up on the situation of Lebanese in Bahrain during a phone conversation Sunday with Bahrain’s King Hamad.

Loyalty to the Resistance bloc MP Nawwaf Moussawi stated that the dispute in Lebanon lies between those seeking to liberate Lebanon from tutelage, aggression, and occupation and those who want to subject Lebanon to colonialism and foreign hegemony.

He added: “The confrontation lies between those who want Lebanon to be the example of sociopolitical life based on unity and diversity and those who only see only see Lebanese as a number of sects.”

Lebanon, which for nearly 30 years endured Syria's military and political hegemony, is closely eyeing developments in Damascus which will undoubtedly have ramifications on the local scene, analysts say.

"Any change in Syria will have a huge impact on the balance of power in Lebanon," said political analyst Raghid al-Solh, an expert on the Arab world.

Defense Minister Elias Murr stressed that the Lebanese army cannot properly establish itself in the South alongside Hizbullah’s armed presence, reported a leaked U.S. Embassy cable published exclusively in Al-Akhbar on Friday.

He added that the army’s position in the South should be bolstered “as soon as possible” in order to destroy Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah’s “rude and arrogant” rhetoric displayed during his August 14, 2006 speech, said the WikiLeaks cable dated August 15, 2006.
