Ethiopia's parliament elected Mulatu Teshome to be the country's new president Monday, for a six-year term in a largely symbolic and ceremonial post.

"Following the opening of the new parliament, a joint session of the House of Representatives and House of Federation elected Ambassador Dr. Mulatu Teshome as the President of Ethiopia," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

An Ethiopian Air Force cargo plane crash-landed at Mogadishu's seaside airport on Friday, killing four people on board, the African Union said.

Two crew members were rescued by emergency personnel and are being treated in the African Union military hospital near the base, said Mahamat Saleh Annadif, an African Union representative to Somalia. He said the runway wasn't damaged and airport operations are expected to resume soon.

A helicopter en route to the United Nations mission in South Sudan crashed Wednesday in Ethiopia, with four Russian crew members injured but no one killed, civil aviation officials said.

"An investigation is underway," Girma Gebre, accident investigation chief for Ethiopia's Civil Aviation Authority said Thursday. "We are on the site now, we are looking for the cause of the incident."

Saudi authorities banned on Wednesday Ethiopian workers from entering the country following reports of crimes against children committed by maids from the African nation.

"We agreed that we will start immediately on consultations at both the technical level... and the political level," Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr told reporters, after meetings in Addis Ababa with his Ethiopian counterpart Tedros Adhanom.

Ethiopia's parliament ratified a controversial treaty Thursday ensuring its access to Nile water resources, amid bitter arguments with Egypt triggered by an Ethiopian dam project.

The deal replaces a colonial-era agreement that granted Egypt and Sudan the majority of water rights and allows upstream countries to implement irrigation and hydropower projects without first seeking Egypt's approval.
