March 14 Throws Ball in Berri’s Court, Flexing Muscles Ahead of Parliamentary Session

The March 14 opposition forces threw the ball of the dispute on the extra-budgetary spending in Speaker Nabih Berri’s court on Friday, saying he should resolve their differences with the March 8 coalition to avert a clash during a parliamentary session scheduled to be held on Monday.

During a press conference he held on Friday, al-Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc leader MP Fouad Saniora reiterated that an urgent draft-law proposed by MPs Jamal al-Jarrah and Ghazi Youssef is the only solution to resolve the dispute on the extra-budgetary spending made by different governments since 2006.

Maronite Leaders Agree to Dialogue with Other Powers after Adopting Orthodox Proposal

The Maronite leaders were unanimous on Friday in agreeing on the Orthodox meeting proposals regarding the parliamentary electoral law, while stressing the need to hold dialogue with the rest of the Lebanese factions on the matter.

March 14 MPs have rejected to become “false witnesses” in Speaker Nabih Berri’s renewed initiative to launch the national dialogue, saying the all-party talks would end up in the vicious cycle of Hizbullah’s arms.

In remarks to pan-Arab daily Asharq al-Awsat published on Monday, MP Elie Marouni said that the March 14-led opposition “rejects to become the false witness of a dialogue that is called for by the March 8 forces.”

Kurd Activist Accuses Syrian Embassy Guards of Assaulting him

A Syrian Kurd opposition member was injured in a clash between protestors and the Syrian embassy’s security guards in the Beirut district of Hamra on Sunday, An Nahar daily reported.

Kurd activist Kadar Saleh Beeri told the newspaper that he was beaten by members of the embassy guards after he was returning from a demonstration held by around 50 Kurds outside the premises of the mission.

Ministers Defend Silence on Incursion as March 14 Calls for Summoning Syrian Envoy

Cabinet ministers defended the March 8-led government against critics who accused it of intentionally not issuing a statement against several incursions made by the Syrian army in Lebanese towns in the North and the eastern Bekaa valley.

2013 Parliamentary Polls: Opposition Fears Hizbullah’s Arms

A prominent opposition source voiced on Saturday a concern that the 2013 parliamentary elections may be threatened by Hizbullah’s arms that “are still obstructing any discussion over adopting proportional or majority rule representation in the parliamentary polls electoral law.”

MP Butros Harb told the daily An Nahar in remarks published on Saturday that he received complaints from Lebanese expatriates that the Lebanese government was stalling in taking the necessary measures to grant them the right to vote in the 2013 polls.

Russian Delegation Seeks to Clinch Oil Exploration Deal with Lebanon

A Russian team is visiting Lebanon in an attempt to sign contracts with Lebanese authorities to have oil exploration rights in Lebanon’s Exclusive Economic Zone, media reports said Saturday.

As Safir daily reported that the delegation was carrying a message from Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to his Lebanese counterpart.
