In a case of hooliganism with a twist, a stadium steward in northern England was trampled by a police horse helping to disperse spectators at the end of a League Cup match.
The incident occurred late Monday at the end of a game involving local rivals Preston North End and Blackpool, when hundreds of Preston fans invaded the pitch to celebrate their 1-0 win in the West Lancashire derby.

Japan on Tuesday unveiled its biggest warship since World War II, a huge flat-top destroyer that has raised eyebrows in China and elsewhere because it bears a strong resemblance to a conventional aircraft carrier.
The ship, which has a flight deck that is nearly 250 meters (820 feet) long, is designed to carry up to 14 helicopters. Some 50,000 people stood for a minute of silence in Hiroshima's peace park near the epicenter of the early morning blast on Aug. 6, 1945, that killed up to 140,000 people. The bombing of Nagasaki three days later killed tens of thousands more, prompting Japan's surrender to the World War II Allies.

Newcastle has signed French striker Loic Remy on a season-long loan from Queens Park Rangers, strengthening its attack ahead of the Premier League season.

India Tuesday accused Pakistan's military of involvement in an ambush on an army post in disputed Kashmir which killed five soldiers and punctured hopes of a resumption in peace talks.
While Pakistan denied any involvement, India's defense minister said New Delhi had lodged an official protest with Islamabad for what was the deadliest loss of life for the Indian army since a 2003 truce agreement.

The musician's publicist says John had the surgery last week at Princess Grace Hospital in Monaco, near his home in the south of France.

International auction house Christie's will appraise some pieces in the Detroit Institute of Arts collection as a federal judge considers a state-appointed emergency manager's request to push the city into the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history.
Christie's also will assist and advise on valuing the artwork while leaving the pieces in the city's ownership, the New York-based firm said Monday on its website.

Denzel Washington will narrate a PBS documentary about the 1963 March on Washington for civil rights.
The network told the Television Critics Association on Monday that the actor had just completed taping his narration for the film "The March" airing Aug. 27, a day after the 50th anniversary of the march that featured Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech.
