German Neo-Nazi Trial Adjourned to May 14
A neo-Nazi trial in which a German woman is accused of involvement in 10 murders was adjourned for a week on its opening day Monday over a defense complaint about the judge.
The case against Beate Zschaepe, 38, who is accused of being part of a far-right killer cell, and four alleged accomplices who face lesser charges, will resume on May 14 at the court in the southern city of Munich, the judge said.
Proceedings had been due to continue Tuesday and Wednesday.
The postponement follows motions by defense lawyers objecting to the trial's chief judge Manfred Goetzl.
They argue among other things that he is biased in insisting that the defense team undergoes security checks on entering the court while prosecutors, police and others are not required to be searched.
Zschaepe is charged with complicity in the murders of eight ethnic Turks, a Greek immigrant and a German policewoman between 2000 and 2007 as a founding member of the National Socialist Underground.
The case only came to light in November 2011 after Zschaepe's alleged accomplices, Uwe Mundlos and Uwe Boehnhardt, were found shot dead in an apparent murder-suicide.
