Moussawi slams 'liar and despicable' Bassil after FPM calls him 'unhinged'

The war of words continued on Friday between Hezbollah official Nawaf al-Moussawi and the Free Patriotic Movement, with Moussawi labelling FPM chief Gebran Bassil as a “despicable and detestable” liar.

"The failing Gebran Bassil continues to export his Quixotic lies through a mouthpiece he has fabricated for himself (the FPM). This Gebran was never worthy of even leading himself, were it not for his forced appointment after the expulsion of the Free Patriotic Movement’s first and ongoing activists,” Moussawi charged, describing Bassil’s current associates as “brokers and opportunists who scooped from his financial and administrative corruption.”

“This Gebran never had any intrinsic worth. He would never have been a minister were it not for those who wanted to appoint him for the sake of the dear, great Michel Aoun,” Moussawi added.

“This coward does not dare to admit that his greed for the presidency undermined an internal front worked for by His Eminence, the Supreme Sayyed (Hassan Nasrallah), who rejected him completely ever since he concluded his meeting with him, refraining from meeting him or even speaking to him by phone,” the outspoken Hezbollah official added.

“I am not concerned with debunking his statement of lies; even those closest to him among the Lebanese do not love or tolerate him, because he is a despicable and detestable person," Moussawi went on to say.

The FPM had earlier in the day blasted Moussawi’s “repulsive and provocative discourse,” accusing him of seeking to “increase divisions among the Lebanese using a sectarian-inciting style that has ... caused harm to the party he represents.”

“By contrast, the Free Patriotic Movement insists on adopting a stance and discourse that preserve national unity without deepening divisions, out of concern for civil peace. It has made sacrifices in its understanding with Hezbollah and in its comprehension of it at the expense of its own interests,” the FPM noted.

Accusing Moussawi of “fabricating and distorting facts,” the FPM said “it is clear that Mr. Moussawi makes a profession out of lying and imagines details of events to give the impression that he is within the decision-making circle” of Hezbollah.

“On the other hand, he lacks any understanding of the dialogues that took place between the Sayyed (Nasrallah) and the head of the Movement (Bassil). The Sayyed’s own testimony about him in the media and Moussawi's dismissal from his parliamentary position are two clear proofs of this,” the FPM added.

It accordingly called on Hezbollah to “refrain from allowing such statements to be issued by this unhinged individual who was previously relieved of his responsibilities.”
