Report: Local, Arab and int'l efforts lead to de-escalation in Nabatieh
Contacts made by President Joseph Aoun, Speaker Nabih Berri and PM Nawaf Salam, in addition to Arab and international efforts, have contributed to pacifying the situation in the city of Nabatieh, Al-Jadeed TV said on Tuesday, after 27 people were killed and 69 others were wounded in three days of Israeli attacks in the Nabatieh region.
Future steps might be taken to “consolidate and immunize stability through the deployment of the Lebanese army and security forces,” Al-Jadeed added.
A senior political source also told the Nidaa al-Watan newspaper that local and international efforts were exerted in a bid to “contain the escalation and prevent its expansion.”
“The foreign contacts with the brothers and friends were led by President Joseph Aoun and they focused on reining in escalation, halting Israeli attacks and compelling Israel to respect the framework agreement, as Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji held broad consultations with his Arab counterparts in parallel with his participation in the Arab ministerial meeting,” the source added.
Washington meanwhile informed the Lebanese government that “the reason for Israel's escalation in Nabatieh and the surrounding area was Hezbollah's attack on the Israeli army and its launching of drones, in addition to Hezbollah's activities in those areas, which prompted Israel to respond forcefully and decisively,” Nidaa al-Watan said.
“Lebanon was also informed that any further action by Hezbollah would be met with a fierce and violent military response,” it added.
Al-Jadeed later reported that the Lebanese Army was staging patrols in the city of Nabatieh.
"The Lebanese Army is expected to deploy at a number of points in the city of Nabatieh in parallel with patrols in the city's neighborhoods, paving the way for a bigger step," it added.
