Aoun thanks US for release of 4 people from Israel, vows to disarm Hezbollah

President Joseph Aoun thanked the "United States under the leadership of President Donald Trump" in a statement Friday after the Red Cross transferred to Lebanon four more people detained by Israel, a day after a first person was freed.

Aoun in a statement expressed his gratitude "for all the efforts exerted, particularly by the United States under the leadership of President Donald Trump, and by international bodies, especially the International Committee of the Red Cross".

"This first step reaffirms the strength of the firm Lebanese position," he added, stressing the necessity of completing the steps outlined in the framework agreement with Israel, which would pave the way for the "full restoration of Lebanese sovereignty, without giving up an inch of our land or a single one of our people."

Lebanon began direct talks with Israel in April.

Aoun vowed to continue the struggle to fully achieve national goals and demands — so that all Lebanese may live with dignity in a free nation where no arms exist except those of its legitimate forces, and no sovereignty over its citizens exists except that of its protecting, guaranteeing, capable, and just state.
