US ambassador inspects AI-scanners at Beirut port

U.S. Ambassador Michel Issa visited Thursday the Beirut port to inspect new AI-powered scanners aimed at stopping smuggling.

"We love to help Lebanon," the ambassador told a journalist at the port.

The AI-powered scanners represent a major technological leap, aimed at stopping the illegal export of Captagon and the import of hazardous materials or weapons. They can scan approximately 100 containers per hour, while the older equipment often handled as few as 40 containers per day.

The scanners were financed and installed by French shipping giant CMA CGM to help Lebanon meet international security standards.

In 2022, CMA CGM won a 10-year contract to run the container terminal at the Beirut port.
