Geagea: Rise of Lebanese State Possible after Collapse of Syrian Regime
Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea stated on Saturday that the year 2012 will witness the fall of the Syrian regime.
He said during an LF dinner at Maarab: “The construction of the state in Lebanon will be possible after the collapse of the regime.”
Lebanon will also then be able to establish normal ties with Syria, he noted.
Furthermore, he stated that the fate of the Lebanese prisoners in Syrian jails will be revealed once Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime is overthrown.
Geagea condemned the killing of three Lebanese nationals by Syrian gunfire in the region of Wadi Khaled last week, lamenting the Lebanese government’s lack of position on the matter.
“This government has nothing to do with anything and it has nothing to do with Lebanon,” he remarked.
“It should have very clearly condemned the incident, launched investigations, and demanded immediate clarifications from the Syrian government,” he explained.
On claims that al-Qaida members had infiltrated Lebanon, he said: “This is the first time that ministers are determined to tarnish the image of their country.”
“Are they making such statements so that we go and combat the extremists? This is their job,” he said.
Measures should be taken against the ministers who made the allegations, stressed the LF leader.
Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn had recently stated that al-Qaida had infiltrated the Bekaa town of Arsal.
Shortly after, twin bombings rocked the Syrian capital Damascus.
The regime accused al-Qaida of being behind the attack.
Premier Najib Miqati, Interior Minister Marwan Charbel, and Internal Security Forces chief Ashraf Rifi have all denied the presence of al-Qaida in Lebanon.
