UNIFIL Spokesman Says Situation 'Under Control' after Latest Skirmish

The spokesperson of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon has said that the area of operations of peacekeepers is “stable and under control,” adding that UNIFIL enhanced its operations south of the Litani river following the latest clash between Israel and Hizbullah.

“UNIFIL's rules of engagement come in conformity with the mission's mandate which was set under Chapter 6 of the U.N. Charter,” Andrea Tenenti told As Safir daily published on Monday.

UNIFIL's area of operations is now “stable and under control,” he said.

U.N. troops have consolidated “their presence on the ground and intensified their patrols across their area of operations in coordination with the Lebanese army,” he told As Safir.

“Currently, the situation along the Blue Line is calm,” Tenenti added.

A Spanish peacekeeper was killed last month during the Israeli military's exchange of fire with Hizbullah in a disputed border area.

The violence came after Hizbullah members fired a salvo of missiles on an Israeli military convoy near the Shebaa Farms area, leaving two soldiers dead.

It was the deadliest escalation on the disputed frontier since the 2006 war between Hizbullah and Israel.

Tenenti told As Safir that UNIFIL played a huge role to calm and contain the situation.

“We continue to work to guarantee the full respect of Resolution 1701” which ended the 2006 war, he said.
