Turkey Blasts CIA Torture Report as 'Inhumane'

Turkey on Thursday joined the chorus of international condemnation over a report on the United States' brutal treatment of "war on terror" detainees, calling it "inhumane."

"Transparency is important but this does not legitimize the torture which was carried out," Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told a news conference in Ankara.

"The treatment detailed in the report is unacceptable and inhumane," he said.

The long-awaited U.S. Senate report, released Tuesday, said the CIA's interrogation of al-Qaida suspects was far more brutal than previously acknowledged and did not produce useful intelligence.

Detainees were beaten, waterboarded -- some of them dozens of times -- and humiliated through the painful use of medically unnecessary "rectal feeding" and "rectal rehydration", the report said.

The Turkish foreign ministry said in a separate statement that protecting human rights was a humanitarian and legal responsibility.

"Torture and other inhuman and humiliating treatment or punishment cannot be accepted under any circumstances," it noted.
