Montenegro Arrest 22 over Human Trafficking

Police in Montenegro said they arrested 22 people Wednesday on suspicion of smuggling hundreds of migrants into Schengen, Europe's visa-free travel area.

The networks busted with arrests in the capital Podgorica and two northern towns of Danilovgrad and Rozaje consisted of locals and four people from Sudan, Pakistan and Morocco, spokeswoman Tamara Popovic told reporters.

She said police were still looking for five more suspects.

Popovic said the 27 are thought to have belonged to two international organisations smuggling illegal immigrants bound for Western Europe into Schengen.

The immigrants were from Syria, where civil war has caused huge numbers to flee, as well as from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Eritrea, Somalia, Mali, Nigeria and other countries.

The smugglers made the migrants transit through Balkan countries and Greece.
